Executive homestead strip, Lavaca County, Texas

Ready when he is, and the gophers have moved out

A CEO who flies into his own homestead between meetings needs a runway and taxiway that are ready without notice. He got that, plus an unexpected side effect underground.

The runway has to be ready before he decides to use it

This owner runs a large industrial company and flies into his own property between commitments. The decision to fly is often made the same day. There is no version of this that works if the runway needs preparing first.

Both the runway and the taxiway are now maintained continuously, so the aircraft can go in and out whenever the schedule allows it. The turf condition is never the deciding factor.

The gophers left on their own

Pocket gophers are a real problem on Texas airstrips. The mounds are a hazard to a nosewheel, the tunnels collapse under load, and the usual remedies are traps, bait, or repeated earthworks. None of them are permanent, because as soon as you stop, the gophers come back.

What happened here was not planned. Gophers are highly sensitive to ground vibration, which they read as a predator or as disturbed ground. A mower crossing the same turf day after day produces exactly that signal, continuously, across the whole surface.

The colony relocated. No traps, no bait, no digging. The mowers were only ever there to cut grass, and the gophers decided the neighborhood had changed.

Worth saying plainly

We do not sell gopher control and we will not promise it. What we can say is that this is the second property where constant light traffic has cleared an established gopher problem, and the owner here considers it the single best outcome of the deployment.

“Bas was very diligent from start to finish. He went the extra mile to map our strip for the mower and make sure it actually worked for our field, rather than settling for a generic setup. Whenever something needed to change, he talked me through what he was doing and why, so I always knew where things stood. Bas made numerous trips to my place to ensure performance and delivery of mowing services. I’d highly recommend VFR Mowing to any airstrip owner. Not only for my turf strip but he also mapped out road right aways and mowing around my home. He pays attention of all details and is acutely knowledgeable.”
