Two mowers, one ranch, and a runway that stopped being a chore

Most people picture a private airstrip as one long rectangle of grass. On a working ranch it is never that simple. This property southeast of Austin has the runway, a taxiway connecting it to the hangar, the apron around the hangar itself, the homestead lawn, and a driveway that runs a long way out to the county road.

Every one of those areas grows at a different rate, and every one of them used to be handled the same way: hook up the tractor, burn an afternoon, and do it again in ten days. The runway got cut when it needed cutting. The driveway edges got cut when someone remembered. The result was a property that looked good in patches and ragged everywhere else.

Two mowers, running continuously on a rotating schedule across all five areas. They work through the cool hours, dock themselves, charge, and go back out. Nobody starts them, nobody rides them, and nobody has to plan around them.

Because the machines are out there almost every day, the grass never gets long enough to need a heavy cut. That changes the whole character of the job. Instead of removing four inches of growth twice a month, the mowers remove a fraction of an inch constantly, and the clippings go straight back into the soil.

Central Texas spent a good part of the season dry. On a lot of strips that means the surface goes hard and cracked, or it goes soft and dusty, depending on the soil. The owner noticed something different here, and it is worth repeating in his words.

Constant light traffic from two machines, day after day, keeps the surface worked and consistent. It is not something we set out to sell. It is something the customer noticed before we did.
