Strip Safety

A safe strip is a
maintained strip.

Robotic mowing isn't just about appearances. Frequent, consistent mowing is one of the most effective things a strip owner can do for safety — and it pays off in more ways than one.

🛬

ALWAYS READY FOR EMERGENCIES

A well-maintained grass strip can mean the difference between a safe off-field landing and a disaster. Regular mowing keeps the surface visible, clear of obstacles, and usable by any aircraft that needs it in a pinch.

📋

POTENTIALLY LOWER INSURANCE COSTS

Insurers reward demonstrated safety practices. Documented, frequent mowing by a professional service — with GPS coverage reports every visit — gives you concrete evidence of a well-maintained airstrip that underwriters notice.

🐀

WILDLIFE & RODENT CONTROL

Long grass is prime habitat for rodents, snakes, rabbits, and the raptors that hunt them. Keeping turf short removes the cover they depend on, directly reducing wildlife strike risk in line with FAA AC 150/5200-33 guidance.

🌿

CONSISTENT SURFACE QUALITY

Robotic mowing delivers the same cut height every time, eliminating the uneven ruts and hidden dips left by infrequent bush-hog passes. A smooth, consistent surface is safer to land and take off from.

Our service includes GPS-tracked coverage reports after every visit — useful documentation if you ever need to demonstrate your maintenance practices to an insurer, the FAA, or a local authority.

Who It's For

Built for strip owners
and airport managers.

If mowing your field is a headache, too expensive, too remote, or just not worth your time, we built this for you.

🏠

PRIVATE STRIP OWNERS

Your strip needs mowing but you're aging out of doing it yourself, or you just don't want to deal with it. We show up on schedule, by truck or by air, and the robot handles the rest.

15–40 acres · Biweekly service

🏛️

SMALL MUNICIPAL AIRPORTS

Runway safety areas, infield, taxiway margins, and outlying acreage. Scheduled or on-call. We carry insurance and can provide COIs.

20–80 acres · Contract or seasonal

🌾

REMOTE BACKCOUNTRY STRIPS

Too far from town for a bush hog guy to bother? We fly mowers in to strips that road-based crews can't reach. Nobody else offers this.

Fly-in service · Central Texas

Is this you?

For one of three
customers.

If you see yourself in any of these, we should talk.

1💸

PAYING TOO MUCH

If you're currently paying significantly more than $65 an acre. Most operators charge $75/acre and up — we come in lower without cutting corners.

2

MOWING IT YOURSELF

If you're spending hours mowing and want more time for family or projects. Hand it off — we'll handle everything from arrival to coverage report.

3✂️

WANT IT TOP-NOTCH YEAR-ROUND

If you need mowers to keep the strip looking sharp year-round while you still hop on your tractor or zero-turn now and then. We're the consistent baseline.

4🚜

...AND ONE WE'RE NOT FOR

We also know there are folks out there who love mowing and have the time. We'd still love to talk — but our service is probably not for you.

How We Deploy

Two ways to work with us.

Choose the model that fits your strip. Both are fully managed, you never touch a mower.

MOST POPULAR
💼

Fully Managed

From $45/acre · Billed monthly · No equipment to buy

We own and operate the robots. You pay one flat monthly invoice — $45/acre for strips 35+ acres, $65/acre below that — and we handle absolutely everything: deployment, weekly mowing, transport, maintenance, software updates, and remote monitoring. Pure service, zero capital outlay.

Mowers stay on your property year-round
Weekly mowing included, up to 4× per month
Zero upfront cost · predictable monthly billing
We own every wrench-turn — no oil, filters, or repairs
Free trial deployment before you commit
🛠️

Owner-Operated

You buy the mowers · We manage everything

You purchase the robots outright and we manage everything else — deployment, scheduling, maintenance, repairs, software updates, and remote monitoring. Best for owners who'd rather hold the asset and lower their long-term cost per mow.

You own the mowers — capex, not opex
We handle all maintenance, repairs, and replacements
Same fleet, same monitoring, same precision
Lower long-term cost for high-frequency use
We swap or upgrade hardware as the fleet evolves

Why VFR Mowing

Purpose-built for
airfield turf.

Not a landscaping company with a side gig. Every detail is designed around how airports and airstrips actually operate.

✈️

WE FLY TO YOU

No road access? No problem. Remote strip? We get in fast, fly in, deploy the mower, and fly out. No other mowing service can do this.

🚛

OR WE DRIVE

Local strips within driving distance? We load up the truck and come to you. Same robots, same service, just a shorter trip for both of us.

🤖

AUTONOMOUS & PRECISE

GPS-guided robotic mowers deliver a uniform cut height every time, critical for turf runway safety and FOD prevention.

💰

MORE MOWING, LOWER BILL

Bush hog operators typically charge $75/acre and up — per visit. We charge a flat $65/acre per month and mow your strip up to 4 times a month at no additional cost. Predictable pricing, no surprise invoices.

☀️

SOLAR POWERING AVAILABLE

Robots charge from your existing power where available. For properties with no nearby outlet, we can deploy a portable solar charging station so the mower runs entirely on sunlight.

📡

5G REMOTE MANAGED

We monitor and control every mower remotely over 5G. Real-time GPS tracking, scheduling adjustments, and alerts, all without a site visit.

🛡️

FOD-FRIENDLY BLADES

Low-RPM blades throw far less debris than rotary tractors. Safe for airframes, props, and turbines parked nearby.

📊

GPS COVERAGE REPORTS

Every visit includes a GPS-tracked coverage map and acreage log, useful for FAA reporting and grant documentation.

🗓️

ZERO COORDINATION REQUIRED

No appointment windows, no day-of scheduling, nobody needs to be home. We mow on any day of the year when conditions are right — no checks to hand over, no gates to unlock, no calls to take.

FAQ

Questions

WHAT ABOUT FOD?

Our mowers use low-RPM mulching blades, not high-speed rotary decks. They throw far less debris than conventional tractors. We also do a FOD walk before and after each visit.

HOW LARGE A FIELD CAN YOU HANDLE?

Any acreage. It's really a function of how many robots we deploy and how fast you need it done. Less speed = cheaper service. Large acreage = better per-acre rate. We scale the deployment to match your field and your budget.

CAN YOU REALLY FLY TO MY STRIP?

If your strip is safely landable and the mowers fit in the useful load, absolutely. Otherwise we truck in. We'll sort out logistics on the quote call.

ARE YOU INSURED?

Yes, we carry both aviation-type insurance as well as GL and equipment coverage. We can provide COIs naming your airport or sponsor as additional insured.

WHAT DOES IT COST?

$65 per acre, billed monthly — one flat invoice each month, year-round. We mow your strip weekly (up to four times a month) at no additional charge. The monthly fee covers all service and maintenance, drop-off and pickup, and remote monitoring. No per-visit upcharges, no fuel surcharges, no separate trip fees. Compare that to bush hog operators at $75/acre and up per visit, with no consistency between cuts. Note: strips under 17 acres may carry a small surcharge — 17 acres is our efficiency tipping point. Below that, we're still competitive, but the surcharge keeps the model viable for us. Reach out for a quote.

WHAT IF I DON'T NEED YEAR-ROUND MOWING?

Totally fine — partial-season or limited-cadence work is welcome, and we'll put together a custom quote for it. The catch on pricing: our $45/acre rate assumes regular, frequent mowing because the robots carry fixed deployment, transport, and maintenance costs that we amortize across many cuts. If you only need us for one growing season, a few times a year, or on an as-needed basis, the per-acre rate will be higher to cover those fixed costs honestly. But we have no issue mowing less — tell us what cadence you actually want, and we'll price transparently around that.

WHAT ABOUT WILDLIFE?

Shorter, uniform grass removes the cover that rodents, snakes, and rabbits depend on. Less prey on the strip means fewer raptors hunting near your runway. This directly reduces wildlife strike risk, consistent with FAA AC 150/5200-33 guidance on airport wildlife hazard management.

CAN REGULAR MOWING LOWER MY INSURANCE COSTS?

Potentially yes. Insurers look at documented safety practices when assessing airstrip liability. We provide GPS-tracked coverage reports after every visit, giving you a clear paper trail of a professionally maintained surface. Some operators have used this documentation to support favorable premium discussions, though outcomes vary by insurer.

IS MY STRIP SAFE FOR EMERGENCY USE IF IT'S WELL MAINTAINED?

A consistently mowed strip is far more usable in an emergency — for a diverted aircraft, a declared emergency, or a precautionary landing nearby. Overgrown strips hide soft spots, holes, and wildlife, and can mask the surface entirely from the air. Regular mowing keeps your strip visible, safe, and available to any pilot who needs it.

CAN IT STAY OFF RUNWAYS?

Yes. Our robots stay off the runway and avoid PAPI, VASI, signage, lighting, and any other runway-environment objects. We map the keep-out zones during setup, and each robot has a WAAS-style base station that corrects its position accuracy to within 3 inches — so it stays exactly where it should be, every pass.
